Anambra State has over the years produced first class creative writers who have left indelible footprints on the sands of time. The death of some of them, including Chris Okigbo (poet), Cyprian Ekwensi (novelist), and Chinua Achebe (novelist), amid the growing concern about declining reading culture and declining educational standards, have raised fears about the future of literary creativity in Anambra State.
The Nigerian Book Foundation (NBF),a non- profit, non-governmental, national book development organization (with its office in Awka), supported by His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, CON, Executive Governor of Anambra State, has embarked on concrete steps to ensure the continued emergence of literary stars in Anambra State, beginning with the 1st Anambra Creativity Festival scheduled for Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 October 2013, at the Women Development Centre, Awka.
