INEC: 45m voters cards ready for distribution

As part of measures to sanitise the Electoral process ahead of the 2015 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Thursday said it had produced 45 million permanent voters cards for onward distribution to its owners. INEC’s disclosure came on the heels of a suggestion by the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, that Nigerians may need to take a second look at the single-term proposal in view of the unnecessary acrimony in the polity among politicians over their ambitions for political offices. However, as part of the preparations for the 2015 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the operational guidelines for the impending national Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The INEC National Commissioner in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Dr. Chris Iyimoga, who represented the Chairman of the commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, at an international experience sharing conference on media and elections in Abuja, said the reason for the apparent delay in the issuance of permanent voters card to registered eligible voters was because of a clean-up exercise meant to sanitise the voter register.
