National President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Mr. Ibrahim Khaleel, has threatened a nation-wide mass protest by the union if the National Assembly throw out the amendment for the local government autonomy. Khaleel gave the warning at the weekend, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, during the fifth quadrennial state Delegate Conference of Ekiti State branch of the union, stating that refusal by the National Assembly to reverse its decision on autonomy for local governments had necessitated the action.
This came as Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, threatened that the state government would invoke the necessary laws against any workers who engaged in partisan politics. Fayemi, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Labour, Mr. Oluwole Ariyo, urged workers to maintain neutrality, stressing that public servants should leave politics to politicians. According to him, it would be better for the workers to sit back and savour the flavour of neutrality than to join politicking because we would invoke the necessary sections of the Public Service rules against anybody that violates it.
