SUPER Eagles midfielder, Mikel John Obi, whose last minute intervention preserved the 2-1 lead over Cote d’Ivoire Sunday in Rustenburg, has revealed that the Eagles won the game because they forced the Ivoiriens to play to Nigeria’s strength. Speaking after the encounter, which has been dubbed final before the final, Mikel said the key to the win was to frustrate the Elephants and try to force them to slow down the game. Emmanuel Emenike and Sunday Mbah scored for Nigeria, while Check Tiote got one for Cote d’Ivoire.
An exhausted but elated Mikel said: “We are very happy with our achievement. We want to congratulate Cote d’Ivoire for their achievement so far in the tournament but today we knew that they’re a good team so if we were able to work together and play for each other on the pitch, then we could stop them. On the Eagles’ chances after the victory over the Elephants, Mikel said: “We still have a semi final to play. We have to keep taking each game one at a time and hopefully if we manage to play well like we did today, we will be very pleased with ourselves,” he concluded.
