INEC to issue 10-year electronic voters’ card

A DISCLOSURE came Wednesday from the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, that the commission would issue permanent electronic voters’ card that would be valid for 10 years. Also, the INEC chief added that about 200 electoral offenders have been prosecuted across the country.

Jega, who spoke yesterday at the INEC/civil society dialogue on the 2015 polls held in Abuja, stated that the culprits were apprehended for allegedly committing various electoral offences during the last April/May 2011 polls. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Jega said, “With the design of the card and specification, it will serve for an average of 10 years, as it could also be used for the 2019 elections.” He said that the electronic voters’ card would eliminate electoral fraud and ensure credible and transparent polls.
