South Africa Nominates Gambari for Highest Award

Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, has been nominated to receive South Africa’s highest national award – The Order of Companions of Oliver Tambo.

The award is the highest national award given to non- South Africans “in recognition of their contributions and support in the fight against apartheid and for the freedom of South Africa.” Gambari was also the immediate past Joint Special Representative of the Chairperson, African Union and Secretary General of the United Nations.

A letter from the Government of South Africa yesterday said Gambari, who was once Nigeria’s Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, was nominated in recognition of his contributions to the struggle for human rights, freedom and justice. –
