Nigerian Lawyer, Nwankwo, Nominated for UN Top Job

A Nigerian female lawyer and gender rights activist, Mrs. Oby Nwankwo, has been nominated as Nigeria’s candidate to the United Nations’ Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women Committee Expert Group. Nwankwo who graduated with an LL.B from the University of Nigeria in 1979 was called to the Bar in 1980. She holds a Masters degree in Criminal Law and served in the Anambra State Judiciary as a Magistrate for 23 years.

The 187 State Parties to CEDAW will vote in elections to fill 11 vacant seats on June 26, 2012 and Nigeria stands a good chance of being elected into the group with the nomination of Nwankwo.
