Blasts hit Maiduguri, Damaturu – …As Boko Haram deadline expires

Three blasts rocked Maiduguri and another one hit a pub in Damaturu last night, as gunmen shot and killed two people also in Damaturu. The attacks came at the expiration of the three-day ultimatum given to southerners by the Boko Haram sect to leave the north. Witnesses said in Damaturu a bomb exploded at “Kandahar,” a popular area that has many beer parlours and brothels, located along Potiskum road. “We were drinking beer and having fun with friends around 7pm when we heard a deafening sound,” Musa Jatau, a resident of Damaturu, Yobe State, said. In Maiduguri, three separate explosions were heard, two of them near a Customs barracks in Mairi Area of the Borno State capital. A Spokesman for the Joint Task Force (JTF), Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Hassan, confirmed the bomb blasts. The Spokesman for Boko Haram, Abul-Qaqa, reportedly told journalists on the phone that they were responsible for the attacks last night. “We launched the attacks because the deadline we gave Christians and southerners to leave this region has expired,” he said. “This is to confirm that we always match our words with actions.”
