Kolade heads subsidy utilisation committee

As tension mounts over the deregulation of the downstream sector of the oil industry – leading to an increase in fuel price from N65 to at least N141 – President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed Dr. Christopher Kolade as the Chairman of the Board of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE). The board “is to oversee and ensure the effective and timely implementation of projects to be funded with the savings accruing to the Federal Government from subsidy removal”, according to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati. Jonathan also set up a committee headed by a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Alfa Belgore, to meet with organised labour and all other stakeholders with a view to resolving issues related to the removal of subsidy on petrol.
